The high velocity days of anti-Trump activism hitting the wall of the pandemic: like many in 2020, Alejandro's Alex Silva knows what it's like for things to go completely and unexpectedly still. Airport protests, weekly marches, your band playing fundraisers, flying to Iowa to canvas for Bernie… then just stillness. Alejandro was born during this time, when everyone was stuck inside; a good time to write music about getting out. Officially formed after their prior band Personal Space (Tiny Engines, Good Eye Records) went on hiatus in 2023, Alejandro solidified over the course of that year, songs developing in the long, quiet days that Alex spent at home with his new baby, and sharpening in the Washington Heights living room of drummer Jesse Chevan; songs informed by becoming a parent for the first time and by losing one. Songs, both funny and heartfelt, about being away from home. Their first EP Anaheim previews some of these stories: the titular “Anaheim” recounts an impulsive decision to follow a college crush across the country; “Rio” conjures an uncomfortable and bittersweet father/son bonding trip; and “Folly Tree” details a long weekend at an arboretum run by an old friend, taking stock of the different paths you've taken. The music continues Personal Space's penchant for hooks with unexpected harmonic and melodic turns, but adds shades of emo and Americana to the mix; fans of Prefab Sprout, The Lemonheads, and Pinegrove will be satisfied.
